Medusa and Kali / Méduse et Kali

I will end this trilogy on fascination (since the blog on Napoleon) by tackling the very origin of the emotion: the mythological Gorgon. One of the three Gorgon sisters, she was the only mortal. Her gaze could turn people to stone: i-e petrify them. The serpent hair and the gaping mouth were the apparatus of this monster. Only Perseus, with the help of the goddess Athena, managed to kill her by using a mirror to protect himself and reflect her lethal look. Freud saw in her much sexual imagery, comparing her mouth and hair to the female genitalia, and Medusa to any castrating motherly figure. The Gorgon has a pendant in Hindu mythology: Kali, the scavenging goddess. She is far more complex since she is also cannibalistic; she roams the battefields in search of flesh. Physically, she resembles her western counterpart, with her long dishevelled hair and her sharp fangs. Both Kali and Medusa constitute the boundaries of the social order and therefore paradoxically guarantee it too.

Je finirai cette trilogie sur la fascination (depuis Napoléon) en parlant de l'origine même de cette émotion: la Méduse de la mythologie. Une des trois soeurs Gorgones, c'est la seule mortelle, dont le regard transformait en pierre, i-e pétrifiait. Sa chevelure de serpents et sa bouche béante constituaient son arsenal. Seul Persée, avec l'aide de la déesse Athena, parvint à bout du monstre en réfléchissant son image dans un miroir. Freud vit en elle beaucoup de connotations sexuelles, la comparant au sexe feminin et voyant en elle la figure de la mère castratrice. Elle a son pendant dans la mythologie hindoue: Kali, la déesse charognarde. Bien plus complexe, celle-ci est aussi cannibale. Elle erre sur les champs de bataille en quête de chair. Physiquement, elle a de longs cheveux en désordre et de longues canines acérées, ce qui rappelle son équivalent occidental. Toutes deux marquent la limite de l'ordre social et en sont donc aussi paradoxalement les garantes.
