French radio France Inter (the equivalent to BBC Radio 4) organizes live concerts under the aegis of Bernard Lenoir, a music critic and talent spotter. Incidentally, he has two equivalents in Britain : the late John Peel and Jools Holland. The "Black Sessions" are not vampirical gatherings but eagerly anticipated acoustic performances where an artist plays a selection from his repertoire while getting the support of other great artists. One of these concerts has remained a landmark since 1998. Only recently has it been rereleased. Yann Tiersen (best-known for the Amelie soundtrack) was the performer and played with the likes of Neil Hannon (the Dantesque Northern Irishman) and Dominique A. One of the most lyrical pieces has to be his rendering of French rockband Noir Desir's "A ton etoile" with Bertrand Cantat. The ill-fated singer delivered a very moving interpretation with a background of accordions, xylophones, keyboards and violins, the usual Tiersen musical landscape. This song corresponds to Noir Desir and Yann Tiersen's main themes : spleen and hope. It is all the more sombre now we know the story between Bertrand Cantat and the late actress Marie Trintignant, violently sent to the sky, turned into an all too early star now looking with a watchful eye.

Entre parenthèses, il a deux équivalents outre-manche : feu John Peel et Jools Holland. Les "Black Sessions" ne sont pas des rendez-vous vampiriques mais des concerts acoustiques attendus avec impatience pendant lesquels un artiste joue une sélection de son répertoire avec le soutien d'autres grands artistes. L'un de ses concerts a fait date depuis 1998. Il ne vient d'être réédité que récemment. Le principal intéressé était Yann Tiersen (célèbre pour la bande originale du Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) et il joua avec Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy) et autres Dominique A. L'un des morceaux les plus lyriques doit être la version de "A ton étoile" de Noir Desir avec Bertrand Cantat. Le chanteur au sombre destin livra une émouvante interprétation, avec en fond sonore le paysage musical de Tiersen : accordéons, xylophones, claviers et violons. Cette chanson correspond aux thèmes récurrents de Noir Desir et Yann Tiersen : le spleen et l'espoir. Elle est d'autant plus sombre maintenant que l'on connaît l'histoire entre Bertrand Cantat et feue l'actrice Marie Trintignant, envoyée violemment au ciel, transformée bien trop tôt en étoile, qui regarde d'un oeil attentif.
