Incubus / Incube

Fusseli's Nightmare (1782) is a very intriguing painting. Its structure is binary through and through : verticality vs. horizontality, dark vs. light, animality vs. humanity and life vs. death. The Hamletian equation "to die, to sleep" could very much apply here. The immaculate swooning lady lying lasciviously is not the centre of attention ; it is the dark brown monster sitting on top of her and staring at us with its bloodshot eyes. This incubus, a male night creature that takes advantage of women during their sleep, is the epitome of the Freudian concept of Unheimlich, or so-called uncanny. The French phrase "petite mort" seems apt and cogent at describing the lady's nightmarish state. The pun in the title becomes apparent when looking at the dark mare on the left-hand side. Order is defeated by a parallel ternary stucture : three beings can be seen, white and dark colours blend into a chiaroscuro effect and the lady, oscillating between life and death, is in a state of pure jouissance.

L'équation hamlétienne "mourir, dormir" pourrait s'appliquer ici. La jeune femme immaculée et se pâmant lascivement n'est pas le centre d'attention ; c'est le monstre brun foncé assis sur elle et nous regardant fixement de ses yeux injectés de sang. Cet incube, créature masculine nocturne qui saillit les femmes durant leur sommeil, est l'épitome de ce que Freud a nommé l'Unheimlich, ou inquiétante étrangeté. "Petite mort" semble décrire avec pertinence l'état cauchemardesque de la jeune femme et le calembour du titre devient apparent quand on a remarqué la jument sur la gauche (cauchemar vient de l'anglais night+mare). L'ordre est défait par une structure ternaire parallèle : il y a trois êtres, le blanc et le noir se mêlent dans un effet de chiaroscuro et la jeune femme, oscillant entre vie et mort, est dans un état de pure jouissance.
